Losing Hair After Pregnancy? Here’s What You Can Do About It

First of all, congratulations on your sweet new addition to your family!Photo via Pexels

Having a baby no doubt brings so many exciting surprises, but the one surprise you may be unprepared for is post-pregnancy hair loss. Hair loss after the baby arrives is not as uncommon as you might think.

Forty to 50 percent of new moms will begin to see some hair shedding anywhere from one to five months after baby comes along. This usually peaks at about the four-month mark, according to the American Pregnancy Association.

And if you’re wondering, or worried, that your newly-discovered receding hairline will be permanent, rest assured it most likely won’t. Like many changes that occur during pregnancy, this one is both normal and generally temporary.

Post-pregnancy hair loss is not considered true hair loss. Rather, dermatologists refer to it as “excessive hair shedding,” according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

The cycle of growth

There are different phases to the hair growth cycle, and your follicles are not always actively producing hair. While the growth stage can last for two years or longer, the follicles will rest for about two months before gearing up to grow again.

When you become pregnant, there will be a sudden change in estrogen levels that shock the hair follicles into shutting down for a while and reducing their normal shedding of hair.

But there’s no reason to worry — those follicles are not damaged, nor are they permanently affected; they’re just ... resting. So the hair loss you’d normally experience (most of us lose between 50 and 100 hairs each day) is delayed.

Post-pregnancy, when these hormones eventually normalize, your hair will start to shed before it returns to its normal growth cycle, which usually happens pretty quickly. So by the time you’re ready to pose for those first-birthday photos, or maybe even before, your hair will have reverted to its original thickness and luster — maybe even better than before!

Restoring your thinning hair

There are several products available that can help you care for thinning hair.

To help you get your hair back faster, you might want to consider our three-step 60-day HairMedica system. It helps nourish hair roots to stop follicle degeneration, accelerate growth of new skin cells and enhance circulation, delivering long-term success. Your scalp, skin and hair follicles get a workout and in return, you’ll see substantial improvement in both your hair quality and quantity, with no further hair loss.

If after you deliver your baby, your hair does not grow back, hair transplantation is another option to consider. NeoGraft’s hair restoration process yields natural results with minimal or no discomfort. It’s the first FDA-cleared follicular unit harvesting and implantation system that delivers a natural looking head of hair – your hair!

We get it; life can get hectic after having a new baby. Luckily, with NeoGraft’s hair restoration system there is quick recovery and minimal down time. After just a few days, many patients are able to return to their normal day-to-day activities.  Our advanced technology makes it the least invasive hair transplantation procedure.
